The Old State House Museum is the oldest standing Capitol building west of the Mississippi River. Construction on the building started in 1833 and was completed in 1842. Although it was still under construction, government officials moved into the building when Arkansas became a state in 1836. The building served as our state capitol until 1911 when construction of the new capitol building was completed.
The Old State House Museum has served Arkansans in many capacities over the years. It has been used as a facility to house federal and state offices. It was once a medical college, and today it is a museum where all of Arkansas’ history can seen tastefully arranged in surroundings designed to teach all visitors.
There have been rumors of ghosts roaming the great halls of this beautiful building. Stories of apparitions showing themselves on the stairs and the sounds of a deadly knife fight have been reported in the small house chambers. Because of the stories, we were allowed to spend the night in the Old State House to gather evidence of a haunting or to dismiss the stories to an over-active imagination.
Unfortunately, the evidence did not present itself adequately to determine whether the building is haunted or not. However, the evidence we did get does allow us to say that paranormal activity abounds within the walls of the Old State House Museum.
